Description:

Primary responsibilities include performing all necessary procedures pertaining to accessioning and technical preparation of all pathology specimens. This individual must function with a high degree of technical expertise regarding handling of specimens to ensure accuracy of diagnoses made from specimens submitted for evaluation.

Education
- High School Diploma.
- Two years of college course work completed (40-60 credit hours) with emphasis in a science curriculum or equivalent:
12 hours Science credits required. Associates of Science, Applied Science (or similar) preferred.
- Must have a strong attention to detail and ability to multi-task
Experience
- One year experience working in Cytology Preparation and/ or Histology Processing preferred, with knowledge of medical terminology.

Essential Functions:

1. Picks up pathology specimens from various locations throughout the hospital and campus such as surgery, endoscopy, etc.
2. Responsible for proper handling, accessioning, and billing of all pathology specimens through entering data into the LIS computer application.
3. Prints labels and work lists.
4. Answers telephone and assists coworkers, patients, staff and pathologists as needed
5. Demonstrates proficiency and understanding of Cytology preparations and procedures including NONGYN's and Liquid Based PAP's, using established quality control standards to ensure patient safety.
6. Stains and coverslips all NON-GYN, GYN, and other pathology slides utilizing proper techniques.
7. Prepares frozen sections including cutting and staining.
8. Performs necessary quality control and maintenance of assigned lab equipment and records.
9. Assists with basic or designated Histology procedures.
10. Assists Pathologists and Pathologist Assistants in designated procedures.
11. Cleans and stocks all work areas including the morgue area(s).
12. Distributes slides and paperwork to cytotechnologists or pathologists
13. Monitors inventory for Pathology areas.
14. Follows policy and procedures for storage length and proper disposal of blocks, slides, surgical specimens, requisitions, and reports.
15. Effectively and efficiently prioritizes workflow within the department.
16. Remains abreast of developments in through self-study and seminar attendance.
17. Performs other duties as assigned.
18. Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution.
19. Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, associates, and visitors to St. Joseph Mercy Health System. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places.
20. Behaves in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of SJMHS.
21. Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
